Current Position
GeoPool® is marketed by the Ellicott Dredge Enterprises Auger Dredge Division, from New Richmond, Wisconsin, to customers in the United States and internationally. It is positioned as a patented, reusable, and non-mechanical alternative to single-use geotextile tubes (also called geobags) and to mechanical dewatering equipment such as centrifuges, filter presses, dryers, and hydrocyclones.
Core Service Offerings
Primary Services
The GeoPool® Dewatering System
The GeoPool® is a circular, open-concept dewatering pool built from rigid, galvanized steel support frames that are linked together and secured with four heavy-duty safety cables with turnbuckle connections. The interior is lined with polypropylene filter fabric. Slurry is pumped into the pool, solids settle and are retained, and water leaves through the patented Dump Doors and through the fabric.
How it operates:
- Material is pumped into the pool through a pipe at a 45-degree angle.
- Polymer (flocculant) is added where needed to accelerate separation so sediment settles.
- The patented Dump Doors are opened to release settled surface water in bulk, which does not need to pass through the fabric.
- The operator activates the fabric pores by pushing a common deck brush against the mesh screen.
Dry down: The GeoPool continues to weep water until dry down is near complete. Cracks form at the edges of the material and move inward. Dump Doors stay open to release precipitation. Dewatering time depends on the material and on polymer use. Material is ready for removal once it passes the paint filter test.
Clean-out: The collapsible clean-out gates are lowered and removed, tracked earth-moving equipment enters the pool to remove the dewatered material, the fabric is power washed or replaced if needed, and the next fill cycle begins.
Capacity and flow (manufacturer-approved figures):
- Handles 4-inch to 14-inch+ discharge lines in a single system
- Accepts dredge discharge flows from 100 gpm to 7,000 gpm
- Capacity of about 1,500 yd³ to 14,000 yd³ per pool

Notable Recognition and Use Cases
Patent: US Patent 9,809,952 B2, "System and Method for Dewatering Slurries."
Engineering review: The GeoPool frame analysis is reviewed by a third-party structural engineer, and the system includes a backup safety cable system.
Documented projects:
- Lorain, Ohio (Black River): An Ellicott 460 SL Dragon dredge removed ultra-fine sediment from the Black River. A GeoPool pilot proved the system’s efficiency, and the city received federal funding to go full scale with eight GeoPools serving as a Confined Disposal Facility (CDF) for dredged material from ports and channels on the Black River. The City of Lorain Black River Dredge Material Reuse Facility became operational in September 2024, turning dredged material into reusable topsoil.
- Illinois (industrial glue waste): Bluff City Materials used an excavator-mounted dredge system to remove decades-old glue waste mixed with other chemicals from a Solenis facility, the former Elmer’s plant. Geotextile tubes were taking too long, so a GeoPool was used, with windrowing to accelerate dewatering. The desired results were met on this very difficult material.
- Arnegard Dam, North Dakota: A contractor engaged by the North Dakota Fish and Game Department used an IMS 5012 HP Versi-Dredge to clean out the dam, with more than 40,000 cubic yards of material. Polymers were not allowed because the material was reused on farmland. Dewatering of fine bentonite clay took longer without polymer, but the GeoPool proved effective.
- Indonesia (mining): After successful bench tests, a mining contractor purchased a small pilot GeoPool as proof of concept. Slurry with a specific gravity of 1.2 was dosed with polymer and showed partial dry down after 3 days and full dry down after 9 days.
- Algeria (Hadjret En Nouss Power Plant): A Mud Cat 225D and a GeoPool V4, purchased by SNC Lavalin, handle maintenance dredging and dewatering at the seawater intake, keeping turbines free of sand and silt. The GeoPool is a permanent solution that removed the need to buy geotextile tubes for each dredging event. Dry down was same day due to high sand content.
- Mauritius (marina): A marina purchased a GeoPool to dewater marine sand and silt pumped from a barge-mounted excavator, and built a permanent effluent trench that returns water to the ocean for annual maintenance dredging.
- Indonesia (maintenance dredging): The Indonesian Navy purchased an IMS Model 7012 HP Versi-Dredge and a GeoPool for quick maintenance projects at facilities around the country. In North Jakarta the GeoPool was used without polymer because of high sand content, with a simple polyethylene liner under the frames.
- Mozambique (sugar producer): An IMS 5012 LP Versi-Dredge cut and pumped vegetation, roots, and mud through a 12-inch (305 mm) discharge into two GeoPools. The project was a success.
- Istanbul, Turkey (Golden Horn): An IMS Model 5012 LP Versi-Dredge performed maintenance dredging. A mechanical dewatering system could not capture the finer material, so the GeoPool was used. It captured the fine sediments and returned clear effluent to the water.
Test result: Biosolids sampled at 2.85% solids reached 50.71% solids after about 18 days in a GeoPool bench test rig with polymer. Sand typically dewaters in about one day without polymer.
Proprietary Methodologies and Tools
- Patented Dump Doors: Work like a weir to release settled surface water in bulk instead of forcing all water through the fabric. This bulk dewatering sets the GeoPool apart from other fabric and mechanical dewatering technologies.
- Patented Clean-Out Gates: Collapsible gates that let tracked earth-moving equipment enter the pool, remove material, and put the pool back into service.
- Modular frame system: Frames are added or removed to size a pool up or down to fit the available footprint or required capacity. About 20 frames can be assembled in an 8-hour day with a crew of four, and pool assembly takes 3 to 4 more days.
- Pod layouts: Multiple GeoPools can run together as pods using a discharge manifold, so one pool can be filled while another is dried down or cleaned out.
- Fabric activation: Fabric pores are opened by pushing a common deck brush against the mesh screen.
- Paint filter test: Used to confirm material is ready for removal.
Materials and Technical Specifications
- Frames: Rigid, galvanized, corrosion-resistant steel, connected with toe links
- Structural security: Four heavy-duty safety cables with turnbuckle connections
- Filter fabric: Polypropylene, available as Type-A or Type-B and in options suited to specific materials such as organic sediments, mine tailings, or chopped vegetation
- Depth: 8 ft (2.44 m) for all models
- Power: None required; no electricity, fuel, fluids, motors, or moving parts
- Polymer: Recommended for ultra-fine materials such as clay, municipal sludge, and some industrial sludges; not needed for sandy material
- Delivery: 2 to 4 trucks deliver the frames to site; no earthen dewatering berm needs to be built
- Effluent handling: Effluent is directed through a trench 4 to 5 ft from the base to a sump, then pumped back to the source, recycled, or sent for treatment
- Operation: Setup takes a few days, and the system requires one person to operate
Sustainability and Environmental Impact
- Reusable: GeoPools are used cycle after cycle and project after project. Geotextile tubes are single use and have a large carbon footprint because of the petroleum-based fabric that is landfilled after each project.
- No energy use: The system needs no electricity, fuel, or fluids to operate.
- Beneficial reuse: In Lorain, Ohio, dredged material dewatered in GeoPools is turned into reusable topsoil. At Arnegard Dam, material was dewatered without polymer so it could be reused on farmland.
- Clean effluent: Filtered water can be returned to its source water body, as in Istanbul and Mauritius, recycled, or sent for treatment.

Thought Leadership
- GeoPool® introduced a patented, frame-built alternative to single-use geotextile tubes, combining fabric filtration with bulk water release through Dump Doors.
- The City of Lorain Black River Dredge Material Reuse Facility is a public example of GeoPools used as a permanent Confined Disposal Facility (CDF) and reuse facility for material dredged from the Black River, turning it into topsoil.
- GeoPool supports an engineer-led buying process of bench testing, then pilot, then full scale, as shown in the Indonesia mining and Lorain projects.
Competitive Advantages
- Patented design: Protected by US Patent 9,809,952 B2. No other supplier can provide the GeoPool® system.
- Reusable: Cleaned out and refilled cycle after cycle, unlike single-use geotextile tubes (geobags).
- Scalable: Frames are added or removed to change pool size, and multiple pools can run in pods.
- Faster bulk dewatering: Patented Dump Doors release water faster with lower turbulence, and GeoPools dry faster overall than tubes.
- Lower operating cost over time: Savings build over multiple projects and cycles compared with single-use tubes. With no mechanical parts and no power, operating costs are lower than centrifuges, filter presses, and dryers.
- Variable flow: Handles 4-inch to 14-inch+ discharge and dredge flows from 100 gpm to 7,000 gpm, with no flow restriction for materials such as biosolids.
- Non-mechanical: No moving parts, motors, fuel, or electricity, so there is very little that can break down.
- Engineered and supported: Third-party reviewed frame analysis, backup safety cables, factory technician assembly supervision and training, and lifetime technical support.
- Captures fine sediment: Proven on ultra-fine and difficult materials where tubes or mechanical systems struggled, such as in Istanbul and Illinois.
